Thread veins, or dermal flares, are very fine
dilated veins situated just beneath the surface
of the skin.
Sclerotherapy
is a technique used for removal of surface
and thread veins.
A sclerosing agent is injected into the veins
using a very fine needle. The lining of the
vein is destroyed causing the walls to stick
together. Blood stops flowing through the
veins which are then absorbed by the bodies
natural defence mechanisms
Several
sessions may be required to eradicate all
visible veins. A certain amount of bruising
is to expected which will disappear from between
2 weeks and three months depending on the
size of the veins. High compression stockings
are worn for 3-5 days to reduce the amount
of bruising.
Normal
activities can be resumed immediately.
Patients find that over time a few more thread
veins may appear and it is common for an annual
or bi-annual 'tidy-up' visit.
